Shot peening is a cold working process used to create a layer of compressive residual stress and change the mechanical properties of metals. It requires pellets (round metal, glass or ceramic particles) to impact the surface with sufficient force to produce plastic deformation.
Shot peening usually uses an air shot blasting system or a centrifugal shot blaster. Air shot peening systems use high-pressure air to blast the workpiece through a nozzle. The centrifugal shot blasting machine uses a high-speed paddle wheel to determine the release time of the medium by adjusting the inlet position of the medium, thereby using centrifugal force to push the reinforced medium. Other strengthening methods include ultrasonic strengthening, wet strengthening and laser strengthening without the use of media.
