Lucknow, a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is the birthplace of this traditional Indian artwork of Chikankari, and hence, this artwork is also popular by the name Lucknow chikankari. Although the exact origin of this traditional craft is still not known, it is believed that Noor Jaha, wife of Mughal Emperor Jahangir brought this needle-artwork with her to India. Previously, this artistic hand embroidery was first done on white muslin fabric with white thread.
