Space is a near-perfect vacuum, devoid of matter and under extremely low pressure. Sound does not travel through space because there are no molecules close enough together to transmit sound between them. Bits of gas, dust, and other matter float around "emptier" areas of the universe, while more crowded areas can host planets, stars, and galaxies. From our vantage point on Earth, outer space is commonly thought to begin about 62 miles (100 kilometres) above sea level at the Kármán line. This is a fictitious boundary at an altitude where there is no air to breathe or scatter light. As you approach this altitude, blue begins to give way to black because there aren't enough oxygen molecules in the atmosphere to keep the sky blue.
