Which Attacker Has the Biggest Opportunity at the 2026 World Cup?

Earlier today I was reading an article about attackers heading into the World Cup and it made me think about how quickly a player's reputation can change during a tournament. The article focused on several forwards who still have something to prove, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Harry Kane, Kai Havertz, and Viktor Gyokeres: https://lastwordonsports.com/football/2026/05/28/2026-world-cup-attackers/. A few years ago I watched a tournament with friends where one player went from being heavily criticized to becoming one of the team's heroes in just a few matches. That's why I think these competitions are so interesting. Personally, I'm curious about Viktor Gyokeres because a strong World Cup could elevate him to another level of recognition. Which attacker do you think has the biggest opportunity to surprise people this summer?

I’d probably say Kai Havertz. He’s one of those players who seems to split opinion wherever he plays. One week people are praising his intelligence and movement, and the next week they're questioning his consistency. According to the article, he enters the tournament with a chance to silence a lot of critics if he performs well for Germany. I remember having a similar discussion before a previous international tournament when a friend kept insisting that certain players were better suited to national teams than club football. Sometimes the shorter format of a World Cup really helps players who can adapt tactically. Havertz feels like that type of player to me. A few important goals or standout performances could completely change the conversation around him by the end of the tournament.

One thing I enjoy about major football tournaments is that predictions rarely go exactly as expected. Before every World Cup, people focus on a handful of stars, but there are always players who emerge from nowhere and become part of the story. I don't pay too much attention to who has "something to prove." I usually just enjoy watching different teams and seeing how playing styles compare across continents. Some of my favorite tournament memories actually come from unexpected performances by players I barely knew before the competition started. That's part of what makes international football so entertaining to follow.
