Women are indoctrinated from a young age to be self-conscious about their bodies. We’re conditioned to look pretty, and have no flaws - and if we do, we must certainly never reveal them. This could explain why so many areas of women’s health - from periods and female hygiene to dryness/pigmentation to menopause - are shrouded in taboo. We’ve been taught that anything less than physical perfection is a cause for embarrassment.
